Dr. Sonika Singh The alumnus of Mumbai University, received her B.E. in Electronics & Telecommunication Engineering from Mumbai University in 1998 and M.Tech. in Digital Communication from U.P. Technical University Lucknow, in 2007. She has also done PGDBM in Marketing Management. She did her Ph.D in 2012 in Electronics and Communication Engineering from Uttrakhand Technical University.She proudly walks along an exceptional experience of more than twenty-one years, rendering additional administrative responsibilities at DIT University. She acts as a significant member of several university-centric committees, while chairing Board of Studies for School of Architecture, MCA and Physics as an External Member.
Holding her Ph.D. in Electronics and Communication Engineering, she is mentoring the young minds at DIT University to leverage the most in this field. Dr. Sonika authored a book on ‘Solid State Devices & Circuit’ in 2004 and proudly owns publication of more than thirty papers in Conference Proceedings and International Journals. Her research interests include Mobile Satellite Systems, Photonics and Channel modelling in Wireless Communication Systems, Dr. Sonika has guided one Ph.D. in EECE Department. She is also the Founder Chairperson of ICEIT (Institution of Communication Engineers and Information Technologists). She is also mentoring NPTEL Online Certification Courses.

For wireless communication frequency spectrum is an essential resource, which become a scarce
commodity due to over crowd. The frequency spectrum of 1-10 GHz is quickly being saturated due to
many legacy technologies present and with many new wireless standards. Since frequency spectrum is
overcrowded we need to find an alternative to this so that the problem can overcome. There are two
possible solutions for this problem: one is to increase the frequency spectrum bandwidth and other is to
efficiently utilize the densely used licensed frequency bands. Both these solutions have some difficulties
such as if we push the wireless systems towards higher frequencies, path loss becomes significant and
also it requires to design and manufacture special analog devices, while for efficient use of frequency
band it requires complex, intelligent and adaptive system. Fortunately, there is evidence that spectrum
shortage is only perception caused by current, inefficient method used for spectrum allocation, namely
fixed licenses. This realization has led to the idea of a dynamic spectrum sensing or “cognitive” radio. A
cognitive radio is a smart radio that is aware of its environment and capable of changing its certain
parameters to adopt the changes in the environment.
Thus, Cognitive Radio has emerged as an effective method for relieving the current problem of spectral
crowding. However, lots of challenges are there to design a Cognitive Radio. In this work, we will
describe the architecture and circuit design issues. Also, we describe the problems associated with
spectrum sensing. We will study and analyze different spectrum sensing algorithms. We also study the
architecture of Cognitive Radio and implement devices such as LNA and mixer circuits used to design
Cognitive Radio.
